Artificial Turf and Sod
Living in Southern California, where drought conditions and dry weather are part of life, homeowners are looking to save money, conserve water, and create an outdoor environment with exceptional curb appeal. Artificial turf may be the solution to these concerns.
Consider a typical residence which has approximately 750 sq. ft. of lawn area. The removal of natural grass and installing artificial grass can conserve approximately 22,000 gallons of water per year.
Synthetic grass also requires no fertilizer, no pesticides, no mowing and reduces urban runoff caused by irrigation. It also cuts down on the amount of green waste, like lawn clippings, going into landfills.
Other benefits of installing turf include:
- Turf looks great year round
- Turf requires little maintenance
- Turf is great for children and pets
Turf Install Process
Remove existing grass & soil and cap off irrigation
All organic material will be removed and hauled away. Existing native soil will be excavated to a depth of 4". Irrigations lines will be tested, capped, rerouted.
Installation of Class II Road Base
3" of class II road base will be installed and compacted to a 95% compaction rate. Grade will be 3/4" below edging.
Install solid edge restraints
Trenches will be dug at lateral edge of project. The trench will be filled with concrete. Pavers will be wet set to the concrete resulting in a paving stone mow strip. When warranted, a bender board edge restraint can be used as an alternative to paving stones.
Move turf into place
Turf will then be moved into place per plan specifications. Turf will be cut using a utility knife to fit snugly against solid edge restraints. Turf will be fastened with 40 d nails at perimeter 6" apart and throughout.
Turf rolls seamed together
Many projects will need two rolls of turf to be seamed together. To achieve a proper seam, the two rolls of turf will be aligned so that their blades of grass naturally fall in the same direction. The rolls of turf will be stretched and nailed approaching the seam. Both rolls of turf will be fastened throughout the field with 40 d nails.
Install sand infill
The turf will be power broomed until the blades of grass are standing upright. Acrylic coated sand infill will then be applied. Turf will then be hosed down and re-broomed as needed.
Natural Grass Landscapes
At Landmark Pavers, we take great pride in beautiful lawns and landscapes. We believe sod exhibits improved uniformity and provides texture and rich color to your outdoor living space. Most sod requires six hours of direct sun per day and should be mowed to a height of 1 3/4” to 2 inches. Mowing a dwarf fescue variety of natural grass requires less maintenance than taller fescue varieties.
Benefits of Installing Sod In Your Landscape
A Natural Sod Landscape Increases Your Property Value
A well maintained lawn can enhance property values by as much as 15%
Sod Is Naturally Cooler
On hot days, lawns can be 30 degrees cooler than asphalt, 14 degrees cooler than bare soil and is cooler than synthetic turf.
Living Sod Releases Oxygen and Absorbs CO2
Sod cools and cleans the atmosphere by reflecting the sun’s heat and absorbing noises, carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants. A 2,500 sq.ft lawn absorbs carbon dioxide and releases enough oxygen for a family of four to breathe.
Sod Filters Groundwater
Sod acts as a natural filter, reducing pollutants by purifying the water passing through its root zone, recharging our groundwater supply.
